Nike Park Expansion

Latest News

Early Spring 2011: Here is the spring 2011 update on the Nike Park Expansion. As the Nike project continues the City of Naperville proceeds with widening Mill Street between Bauer and Diehl. While that work is related to the Nike expansion – it will provide direct access to the new parking lot at Mill and Commons – its design and construction is under the direction of the City of Naperville. According to a recent press release, the Park District is considering buying 20 acres of land adjacent to Nike Park (East of Mill South of Diehl) for some much needed North side Outdoor/Indoor sports facilities. This land was originally planned for multi-family housing (high density condominiums) and commercial development.

In the next 90 days the Park District will seek resident feedback to determine the level of support for this plan. If community support does not exist, the Park District has the option to pass on the purchase.

If you would like to support this proposal you can do one or all of the following:

  1. Email everyone you know that would be interested in this new development.
  2. Come to the community input meeting that the Park District is hosting on Monday April 2nd from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the municipal building on Eagle St Aurora Ave (across from Naper Settlement).
  3. Write an email to the following Park District commissioners who are looking for your feedback:

Date: March 9, 2007 Naperville Park District seeks to acquire land southwest of Nike Sports Complex

The Naperville Park District has signed a contract to purchase a 20 acre parcel of land adjacent to the Park District's existing Nike Sports Complex on the east side of Mill Street and south of Diehl Road.

The land was originally intended to be sold for multifamily housing and retail, but the Park District felt that its location would be ideal for further expansion of indoor and outdoor recreation space. The Park District has a land deficiency in this area and acquiring this parcel would help to achieve more of a balance District-wide.

The Park District has a 90-day due diligence period as stated by the contract. Site testing, to begin immediately, will be conducted by a firm contracted by the Park District to review the overall environmental and soil conditions at the proposed site and existing park.

Completion of a successful purchase agreement between the Park District and the land developer, B.C.T., LLC, is contingent on the test results.  Additionally, it will rely on the feedback from area residents and whether or not they are in favor of the Park District purchasing the land for the intended use. The land would be purchased at a cost of approximately $8 million. The contract has been structured as a partial sale/partial donation, and the contract price to the Park District is significantly below the price reportedly being offered to B.C.T. by private developers.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Park District  on this project," explained Kevin Woods of B.C.T., LLC. "Once we realized how much sense it made for the Park District to acquire this land adjacent to their existing park, we felt it was important to do what we could to help satisfy the needs of the community. From our perspective, it was simply good business."

Within the 90 day exploratory waiting period, the Park District will seek resident feedback to determine the existing level of support for this plan.  If community support does not exist, the Park District has the option to pass on the purchase.

"We reviewed the potential of several properties with the intention of acquiring additional land for recreation purposes," explained Eric Shutes, Director of Planning. "The land adjacent to Nike offers the most options for indoor and outdoor development to serve the recreation needs of the community." The Park District will host a public information session to gather input regarding its proposed acquisition of the property on Monday, April 2 from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the City's Municipal Building's Rooms B & C. The municipal building is located at 400 S. Eagle Street.
